WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism is a sacrament that brings about and symbolises someone’s visible sharing in the life of the Church and therefore salvation. The basic structure of the sacrament is a washing of water done in the name of God: Creator, Son and Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

WHAT IS A SACRAMENT?

A sacrament is an outward sign of invisible grace. The outward sign is the water and the grace is union with Christ in his death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4), and new life in the Spirit.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF BAPTISM?

Baptism symbolises spiritual rebirth and becoming a member of Christ body the church. Baptism marks someone out as belonging to Christ and to Christ community the church

WHO CAN BE BAPTISED?

Anyone who has not been baptised and who is not opposed to baptism and who (if an adult) displays faith and repentance can be baptised. This includes adults and infants. The rite of baptism is administered only once in a person’s life.

WHY DO WE BAPTISE CHILDREN?

Infants are regarded as committed with their parents to a relationship with God. The practice of infant baptism witnesses to the truth that God must first give GRACE to people before they can respond. The parents and godparents make promises to God and the Church that they will bring up the children to follow Jesus. For this reason we usually require that parents and godparents are practising members of the church.
